Linebacker Scott Shanle traded to New Orleans Saints for 2007 draft choice
August 23, 2006 - Jackson, Mississippi -
The New Orleans Saints added depth at linebacker, along with a solid special teams player, in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys in which the Saints acquired LB Scott Shanle for an undisclosed 2007 draft choice.
Shanle (6-1, 240 pounds) started 11 of 37 career games, including eight of 15 last season in Dallas as he gathered 50 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He finished fourth on the Dallas Cowboys special teams units with 15 tackles and recorded 26 tackles as a starter over the final three games of the 2004 NFL football season.
After Wednesday's practice on Millsaps College's Upper Fields, Scott Shanle said, "I was really excited when I found out (about the trade). I got a call from (Dallas Cowboys) Coach (Bill) Parcells, who told me that he got me into a good situation."
Sean Payton, the Saints' head coach and Gary Gibbs, New Orleans' defensive coordinator -- were both in Dallas when Scott Shanle played for the Dallas Cowboys.
"It's a big factor anytime you come to a team," Scott Shanle said about the comfort level of having both of those coaches on the same team with him. "Knowing both Coach (Sean) Payton and Coach (Gary) Gibbs, I feel comfortable with both of them."
About what the Saints expectations are of him, Scott Shanle said, "Anytime you have a team who makes a trade with you, they are expecting you to come in and contribute to the team and that is what I am looking to do."
Sean Payton said about Scott Shanle, "He is another player who we can put at the 'WIL' (weakside linebacker) position. Dallas has real good depth at that position and Gary and I have a real good idea of what we are getting with him."
Shanle was originally selected by St. Louis in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft after a solid college career at Nebraska. He played in six games for the Rams in his rookie season before he was claimed by Dallas late in the year.
