Toe surgery for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem has toe surgery for torn cartilage

May 10, 2010 - Metairie, Louisiana. New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem will miss the remainder of the New Orlean Saint's offseason workouts after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage on the second toe of his left foot. At the New Orleans Saint's practice facility on Airline Drive, as Robert Meachem walked from his car with the aid of crutches and a boot on his left foot, he said, "It’s just a nick."

Sean Payton said: "He (Robert Meachem) initially sustained the injury late last season. The decision to operate last week was made after he (Robert Meachem) continued to experience pain during the early weeks of our offseason program. It’s good that we caught it now. It began bothering him again and became aggravated the more he started running on it. So we just felt let's go ahead and get it fixed now. It’s going to set him back. Our goal is to get him back in time for the start of training camp, the first week or so (July 29)."

Wide reciever Robert Meachem, the New Orleans Saint’s number 1 pick in the 2007 NFL draft, caught 45 passes for 722 yards with nine (9) touchdowns during the 2010 regular season and another four (4) catches for 25 yards in the postseason. Wide reciever Robert Meachem led the team with ten (10) touchdowns during the 2010 season. Robert Meachem made the best play of the Saints regular season in Game 12 vs the Washington Redskins when he ripped the ball from the grasp of Redskins safety Kareem Moore following Kareem Moore's interception. Robert Meachem then ran 44 yards for a touchdown (his football steal from Kareem Moore was ruled a fumble-recovery).

We look forward to a speedy recovery for New Orleans Saint’s Wide reciever Robert Meachem.

Robert Meachem drafted #1 by the New Orleans Saints

Robert Meachem struggles at New Orleans Saints rookie camp

May 15, 2007 - First-round pick Robert Meachem struggled in his first appearance on the Saints' practice field. Meachem limped around with a brace on his left ankle, which he hurt during practice Sunday morning.

Coach Sean Payton said Meachem was falling behind even before the injury, "He struggled some. He had some blisters on his feet, and he's overweight. Today, he tweaked his ankle a little bit during the morning practice. It hasn't been all roses for him. He's been on that first-round tour that these guys go on where they visit all these teams and eat all these fun dinners. And it looks like it right now. So he's got a ways to go."

Meachem agreed his pre-draft schedule hurt his conditioning, "I think I had like nine visits or so. And every visit they give you a big old meal. So for me, I tried to work out when I could, but I don't think I got enough workouts in."

Robert Meachem should stop making excuses and take responsibility for his poor conditioning. Even on his hectic pre-draft schedule, he could have asked each team to schedule him for a 3 hour block of "gym time" where he could have worked on his off-season physical conditioning. Robert Meachem is frustrated and he should be, "I couldn't show anything because I was too tired. ... Coach expects you to run 4.3 every play," Meachem said, referring to his speed in the 40-yard dash. "They drafted me as a first-round pick and I can't show them why they got a first-round pick out of me. And it's kind of frustrating because, when you think about it, you've got a lot of people back home wanting to see you do good. And for me to come in and not be in the shape that I was supposed to be in, for me, it's frustrating because I think I'm hurting them as well."

Saints great rookie receiver Marques Colston also struggled in rookie camp last year. Marques recovered and was the Saints best receiver in 2006. Colston called Meachem over the weekend to console Meachem. Robert Meachem said, "He (Marques) talked to me and he told me he probably got in his best shape during offseason workouts between rookie camp and training camp. It gave me a little confidence."

Reggie Bush is familiar with what Robert Meachem is going through. "I know exactly what he's going through, and I went through it last year. I actually didn't even make it on the field. I got hurt stretching, so he's doing better than me."

Robert Meachem begins with New Orleans Saints rookie camp

May 11, 2007 - The New Orleans Saints number one draft pick Robert Meachem (WR) is ready for rookie camp. The Saints rookie receiver Robert Meachem said, "I feel almost like I'm living a dream. Now you've got to prove what you're made of."

Robert Meachem said, I'm not too nervous. All you've got to do is go out there and trust that God is with you and work hard and have fun. Just come to camp, come in shape and try to learn everything as quick as possible. Then it goes straight back to football. This is why they came and got you, because you're pretty good at football."

Robert Meachem said he plans to stay for the rest of the summer program in New Orleans.

Robert Meachem drafted #1 by the New Orleans Saints in 2007 NFL Draft

April 28, 2007 - The New Orleans Saints drafted Robert Meachem (WR) with their #1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Meachem is a redshirt junior wide receiver from the University of Tennessee and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Last season, Robert set the University of Tennessee season record for receiving with 1,298 yards. Meachem (6-2, 214) was voted to the 2006 third-team All-American by the Associated Press. Robert had 125 career receptions and 2,140 career yards for the Tennessee Volunteers.

Meachem joins a New Orleans Saints team that has two high-profile offensive weapons: 2005 Heisman winner Reggie Bush (RB) and Marques Colston (WR), a seventh-round pick in 2006 who was the NFL rookie leader in receptions last season. Robert Meachem will compete with Devery Henderson (WR, 5-11, 200), Terrance Copper (WR, 6-0, 207) and David Patten (WR, 5-10, 190) to replace ex-Saint receiver Joe Horn in the starting line-up. Horn was released by the Saints in March. Marques Colston is the New Orleans Saint's Number 1 receiver.

Robert Meachem was one of six receivers drafted in the first round. He was drafted after Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson (2), Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr. (9) and LSU's Dwayne Bowe (23). The New Orleans Saints didn't expect Meachem to fall to number 27, but it was a deep draft for wide receivers. Robert Meachem was the highest-rated player on the board when it was the New Orleans Saints turn to pick.

Robert Meachem was born on Sept. 28, 1984.

April 29, 2007

Robert Meachem quotes:

"Just like Reggie Bush, I bring yards after the catch," Meachem said. "I hate to get tackled by the first guy."

"In every area, I'm ready to pick it up tomorrow if I can. I'm going to do my best."

"(Character) is a big plus for me, I haven't been in any trouble. I haven't had any off-the-field issues. That's a big plus for me."

New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis quotes on Robert Meachem:

"We talked about getting a receiver sometime during the draft, we didn't specifically say we needed a guy in the first round or second round, but we did talk about it. At the end of the day, he (Robert Meachem) was the highest-rated player on the board when we picked. Significantly.

"We worked this offseason to put ourselves in a position that we could take the best player available to us, and that's what happened. That's been successful for us in the past, with guys like Will Smith and Deuce McAllister. So we definitely wanted to go into this draft with that approach."

"His size and speed, his hands. There's just a lot of things to like about Robert Meachem"

"There's nothing not to like about the kid,"

Mel Kiper's take on Robert Meachem:

Meachem is "a guy that plays well in the big games. He emerged as a big-time player and certainly a prospect a lot of teams from the middle of the first round on have had their eye on."
