Charles Grant (DE) gets extension with New Orleans Saints$63 million, seven-year contract extension for Charles Grant (DE)April 26, 2007 - The New Orleans Saints reached an agreement with Charles Grant on a seven-year contract extension worth up to $63 million. Grant had the franchise tag put on him and was kind of upset at the New Orleans Saints about it. The franchise tag allows a team to keep a free agent for one season at a salary based on the average of the top five salaries in the league for the same position. In Grant's case, it's approximently $8.6 million for the next season.Grant had been working out on his own in Florida rather than in New Orleans since the New Orleans Saints' offseason program began earlier this month. Grant has played five seasons in New Orleans since being the Saint's first round draft pick in 2002, 25th overall. Charles Grant played college football at the University of Georgia Bulldogs. Grant (6-3, 290) has a total of 298 tackles, 36 sacks and 15 forced fumbles during that span. He played in all 16 regular season games in 2006 and had 64 tackles, including six sacks. Charles's best season was 2004, when he had 78 tackles, with 10.5 sacks. The new deal locks in what has been a formidable starting tandem of defensive ends in New Orleans for at least three more seasons. Pro Bowl defensive end Will Smith, the Saints first-round draft choice in 2004, is under contract for three more seasons. Last season, the pair combined for 16.5 sacks. The Saints advanced to the NFC Championship game for the first time in team history last season, and Grant said he believed his chances of getting to the Super Bowl were as good in New Orleans as anywhere. Grant said, "I'd be upset if we don't go there this year between all the returning starters. Last year it was a new coaching staff, a lot of new players. This year everybody knows were we're supposed to be, so we've got no excuses now. Everybody's got to be ready to rock-n-roll." |
